Life 101

Each week, we have a special 'motto or life lesson'.
This is to be an encouragement to the children and to help them to be the best that they can be.

I f you missed the last few weeks here they are:

"What is in you will flow through you".

This lends itself to the idea that if you surround yourself in negativity, it has ways of becoming a part of our thoughts and words. It can affect those around us and ultimately spell disaster for us; therefore we must be surrounded by positivity and goodness in order to allow that to flow through our every being.

"You are what you believe".

This idea promotes the idea that if we have a dream, we should never give up on it. Work hard, knuckle down and set goals and we may harvest from that investment. We all have a seed of greatness within us and treated in the right manner (encouragement, self belief, motivation and passion), it can yeild awesome results.

"Our values guide our decisions and decide our success".

This thought just means that our value system is the core to our ability to succeed. If we are intent on cutting corners, cheating others, bad mouthing, giving up in tough times, then our ability to overcome adversary is severly compromised.

I am a huge believer that the children in my class are not a statistic, they are individuals with hopes and dreams. I see it as my job to help them (along with their families), to understand that they matter. That their input and participation in life will shape the world as we know it. As an adult, mentor, father, is this not our duty to support this idea?

Think about this, a lot of the worlds most influential people attribute their success to a parent, a simple idea or suggestion, a point in the right direction, a shoulder to cry on, a consistent supporter, a listener, an encourager, or even a teacher.

That means that I am in the business of developing 'History Makers'. "What an honour"!!!

This will be my final post for the room 4 blog!

It has been a pleasure to teach all of you. I want to thank you for being yourselves and bringing something unique to the class. I will miss you all, but am very sure that you will succeed in all things provided you want it, work for it and believe in yourselves the same way that I do!!

Thanks for your support in 2010 through my illness, production time, my grandfathers passing and the birth of my new little boy Terriah. You will always have a special place in my heart and I wish you all the very best for 2011. This year is just another step on that staircase of your life!!

At 6.01am this morning Fiona and I became the proud parents of a beautiful 9.5lb baby boy

His name is Terriah Kalel Reade.

Well it is almost the end of another fantastic year. Thanks to all the children of the Un4gettable class...room 4, for all their hard work this year.

Things to be aware of for week 10.

Tueday is our Prize Giving at 10am (don't be late as seats can be hard to find).

The boards with the new classes will be available after prize giving, so make sure you check them out to see where you'll be next year.

It is also Miss Hems birthday on Tuesday. (make sure you give her a big hug, she loves those)

Wednsday ia half day. So please make arrangements to collect your children.

Today Apanui School paid tribute to the 29 Pike River Miners. Along with the rest of our nation (New Zealand) We gave 2 minutes silence.

On behalf of the children and myself in Room 4 at Apanui School, Whakatane. I would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the families of those that were lost in the mine.

May God bless those families and bring strength and comfort in this time of grief and sadness.

Hi everyone, I am back on board after my Granfathers tangi and looking forward to the coming weeks before holidays.

It has become apparent that children have far too much belongings in their pencil cases and are having space issues in their tote trays.

I have asked the children to take home all of the excess stationary items to make room in their desks. This means that I will only allow one pencil case. (some children have 3 or more).

A real bunch of 'BRIGHT SPARKS"

Today was a real 'electric' day. We saw a lot of higher order thinking. Light bulbs were turning on all over the place....literally.

Today the team and I explored the world of Science and Technology. In particular, we experimented with light bulbs, wires and batteries. Many of the groups found this to be challenging yet exciting.

Thankfully, no harm came to anyone but most children were...shocked....at how easy and fun the science experiment was.

From my (the teacher) perspective, it was awesome to see everyone 'switched on'...to learning.

Their task was to read a journal story and then reinact it using a digital camera.

After a very busy and somewhat disruptive term, the team at Un4gettable have knuckled back down into serious school work. Today the children are discovering the art of Scaffitto. This involves colouring a page in bright, vibrant colours then painting over top in black paint. Once dry, they use a sharp end of something like a paint brush or pencil and scratch designs and shapes out of the paint. The end result is an array of fabulous colours. Here is a picture of the children at the beginning stages.

Clean up Whakatane

Yesterday was a special day for the town of Whakatane as the students of Apanui School took to the streets and river walkways. They were on a mission to clean up our town.

This is an awesome opportunity for children to build a greater sense of pride in their school and the town they live in.

This year saw children learning the difference between general rubbish and recycling. Some children had blue bags for recycling and black bags for general rubbish.

Closure for a mourning family

The thoughts of Room 4 are with the family of 4 year old Lucas Ward who was found today after nine days missing.

Lucas' body was discovered by a member of the public in the Waimata river (400m upstream from his grandmothers house).

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Lucas.

Whakatane in the news...

Well it has been very wet weekend for all in the Bay. With around 40 people evacuated from their homes and many boat owners wondering if their vessels would end up in the Warehouse carpark, people were in awe of the rate of the rising river levels. As seen in the picture above, much of the ground near the Whakatane Infomation Centre was under water.

A sigh of relief has come by many this morning as they wake to a beautiful sunny day...no more rain. (at least for today).

Hi everyone, We are nearing the end of the term. Its hard to believe that we are halfway through the year.

I have decided to stop homework for the remainder of the term. I have asked the children to keep reading each night as this has proven to help with lifting their levels and self confidence.
I also asked the children to continue practicing their times tables. (Focus on 2, 4, 5, 10x).

Parent interviews are on Tuesday and the response has been very positive. Please remember that if you wish to see me about your child then you will need to return your slip before Friday.
I only have times AFTER 5.30pm left.

I am always here for you to see if required.

David 'tows the line' with Goliath

It was penned as a easy win for the Italians. A hame against 'no-hopers and part timers'. This couldn't be further from the truth as the All Whites laid out a convincing challenge to the Italians that almost left the reigning world champs in a shock loss.
Although NZ finished with a 1-1 draw, it meant an historic moment in NZ Football history.
There is no denying that our National Football team is pretty "All White!!"

Due to the immense tropical storm Agatha, the city of Guatemala was thrown into a state of emergency as the torrential rain and flooding opened up a large sinkhole in the middle of a busy intersection. Swallowing a three story building and one other small building. It is believed that a security guard was killed in the collapse. Authorities say that it is a miracle that more people weren't killed.

The hole measures 66 feet (20m) across and plunges nearly 100 feet (approx 30m)

Although geologists are excited by this event, locals are baffled and shaken.

Makes you feel a little better about the rain we have had...

It seems that there are no arachnaphobes in room 4. This is a furry discovery of another member of the class. We believe that this is a fine specimen of the Wolf Spider.

Flynn and the Zappers lost to the Thornten Reds. It was 1-0. Nice try guys good luck next week.

Hope and Georgia had an awesome game. Special mention goes to Georgia and her team for their outstanding win over the Edgecumbe Planes 7-1. WOW, must of been a great game.

Us Rugby boys (Sasha and Cory - your handsome sports update reporters) had a hard game. We vs Ruatoki, a tough team but we pulled it off!! We won 25-5 . Go the JAB Bad Boys!!! Represent!!!

National Young Leaders Day 2010

While the rain poured in Whakatane, the sun shone brightly inside and out of the Rotorua Energy Events Centre yesterday. I (Mr Reade) took 10 Apanui School Leaders to the National Young Leaders Day 2010 conference in Rotorua.

The theme of this years conference was "PLUGGING INTO YOUR POTENTIAL" (Mr Robinson would have loved it).

Great speakers, awesome life changing advice and encouragement were being dished out like parking tickets.

Mr Reade even won a food eating comp in front of the thousands of onlookers as he gobbled up cheeseballs, cheerios and VERY creamy spongecake...all at the same time.

What is Matariki?
Matariki is a small but distinctive star cluster whose appearance in the north eastern pre-dawn sky in late May, early June marks the start of a new phase of life.

Although there are tribal differences regarding the timing, celebrations most often begin at the next new moon after Matariki has risen. As with similar ‘moveable feasts’ in the western calendar, such as Easter, the exact timing varies from year to year but usually occurs during the month of June.

In ancient times Matariki arrived at the end of the harvest and was therefore a time of plenty for our ancestors. The kumara and other root foods had been gathered. The migration of fish such as moki and korokoro also made Matariki a time of bountiful catches. Visitors were often showered with gifts of specially preserved eel, birds and other delicacies. Matariki was a time to share and present offerings to others.

Matariki can be translated in two ways – Mata Riki (Tiny eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God). Either way the eyes are thought to watch over the land and its people.

Today the Awesome 4some team looked at the "Bb" sound.

We investigated all the words that we could find that began with the "Bb" sound.

We also looked at words that contained the sound in the middle of the word and also ended in "Bb"

Can you think of any words with the "Bb" sound in it? Can you find a word with more than 3 "Bb" sounds in it?

The reason for this type of learning is to help children to identify the sounds within the english language. A better understanding of these sounds will aide them in their ability to spell words and decode unheard or unseen words.

Cinquains

Today, the team have been looking at and learning about 'Cinquains'.

A cinquain is an oriental verse of five lines following the pattern of (1, 2, 3, 4, 1) words in each
line. A cinquain produces a fragile image or a delicate thought.

A cinquain pattern contains 1 noun, two adjectives, three verbs, a statement or feeling and the initial noun.

Mercedes has been with us since the beginning of the year and has been a reall asset to the class atmosphere.

We are going to miss having her happy, caring, energetic personality in the class. We wish her all the very best at her new school in Kawerau and hope that she will leave us a message now and then to let us know how she is doing.

Fun-damentals day

Yesterday, Apanui had the Sport Bay of Plenty team at our school. They were conducting tests on year 3/4 children to establish the levels of basic fundamental skills that the children have. This included jumping, running, skipping, throwing and catching. Some of our Awesome 4some got to participate and loved it!!

This is the first official post for the Awesome 4some blog for 2010.

We are really excited about 2010. It has already begun to look very fun and learning filled.

Term 2 will be no exception with the possible start to a school production, Choir groups, Rangitaiki Festival, A visit from Mrs Byers (Northland Literacy Advisor), Teacher professional development in Mathematics, an Africal drumming show and much more.
